2nd SMASH Xmas seminar with Prof. Marko Robnik Šikonja

University of Nova Gorica, Lanthieri Mansion, Vipava

The Christmas seminar is an opportunity to meet the members of SMASH network.

At the beginning SMASH Fellows will give a brief overview of their research activities. That will be followed by a talk given by Prof. Marko Robnik Šikonja from University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, entitled: "Challenges of using large language models in science".

At the end of the seminar, there will be an opportunity for networking and socializing over lunch.

Abstract:

Currently, large language models (LLMs) are revolutionizing methodological approaches in numerous scientific fields. By digesting and analysing large amounts of data, LLMs can provide insights into complex phenomena and questions. However, to obtain scientifically useful results, studies involving LLMs must be carefully designed and shall involve strict qualitative and quantitative evaluation.  We will explain the working of LLMs, necessary to understand their performance, and emphasize the need to establish trust in their results.  Further, LLMs raise new ethical dilemmas and open questions concerning privacy, reproductibility, and responsible research.
