He is director of BPPC, professor of physics and astronomy at UC Berkeley, and senior faculty scientist at LBNL. His research interests cover astrophysics and cosmology, statistics and machine learning for science. He is the recipient of the David and Lucile Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering (2000), the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (2001), the Helen B. Warner award of American Astronomical Society (2001) and the NSF CAREER award (2002). In 2019 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 2021 he received prestigious 2021 Gruber Cosmology Prize.
