Bahira Shahim, MD, PhD, FESC, is an Assistant Professor and cardiologist at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital. She is a team leader for Valvular Heart Disease within the Cardiology research environment at the Department of Medicine, Solna . Dr. Shahim’s research focuses on identifying novel screening strategies and prognostic markers for valvular disease, particularly mitral valve prolapse and aortic valve calcification. Her work utilizes large clinical imaging datasets including cardiac CT for calcification mapping and cardiac MRI to study myocardial fibrosis and its link to life-threatening arrhythmias. Her team’s goal is to develop personalized, data-driven approaches to determine the optimal timing for surgical interventions. She offers high-level mentorship in translational cardiology and the application of imaging-based biomarkers to clinical problems.
