Teresa Gonçalves
Teresa Gonçalves is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Évora, where she has been teaching since 1999. She currently lectures in Machine Learning and Deep Learning at both undergraduate and master’s levels.
She is a senior researcher and Director of VISTA Lab. She serves as Director of the MSc programme in Informatics Engineering and Deputy Director of both the MSc programme in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and the PhD programme in Computer Science. Previously, she was Head of the Department of Computer Science (2011–2015), Director of the undergraduate programme in Informatics Engineering (2016–2021), and Deputy Director of the same programme (2021–2023).
Her research focuses on Intelligent Systems, with particular emphasis on Machine Learning methodologies. She has contributed to information extraction and supervised learning across multiple data modalities, including structured/tabular data, textual data (Portuguese and English), and image data (medical and satellite imagery).
She has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Scopus, accumulating over 700 citations and an h-index of 13. Approximately 57% of her publications involve international collaboration, demonstrating sustained engagement in global research networks.
She has played both leadership and collaborative roles in several nationally and internationally funded research initiatives. She is currently the Principal Coordinator of HarmonicAI (MSCA Staff Exchange), which addresses human-guided, multi-objective design of explainable, fair, and privacy-preserving AI for digital health. She also contributes as a team member to SenforFire (Interreg VI-B SUDOE), INCOME (”la Caixa” Foundation), and REDINEST (Erasmus+). Previously, she coordinated SNS24.Scout.IA (FCT – AI in Public Administration), NIIAA (Portugal 2020), SSAPI (Erasmus+ CBHE), as well as several Erasmus Mundus projects.
