The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute

SMASH Associate partner

The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) was established in 1994 as the result of nearly a decade of research activity initiated in 1985. That year, the group moved from the Advanced Studies Research Centre (CEAB), located in the coastal town of Blanes, to a modern research facility on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

Over the past 30 years, IIIA-CSIC has grown into a cohesive and dynamic community of around 60 researchers and engineers, including approximately 20 PhD students. Its team brings together expertise across a broad spectrum of Artificial Intelligence disciplines, including machine learning, knowledge representation, multi-agent systems, agreement technologies, natural language processing, automated reasoning, optimisation, and semantic technologies.

IIIA-CSIC researchers have led more than one hundred national and international research projects. These initiatives span both fundamental AI research and the application of AI methods in domains such as education, healthcare, and manufacturing. In addition, IIIA-CSIC actively contributes to the Catalan innovation ecosystem through numerous technology transfer collaborations with industry.

Since 1985, the researchers affiliated with IIIA-CSIC have produced more than 3,000 scientific publications and have actively contributed to the global AI community through leadership roles in scientific governance and conference organisation. Its members serve on editorial boards of leading journals (such as JAAMASAIJJAIR, and Fuzzy Sets and Systems), scientific boards (including IFAAMAS and the IJCAI Board of Trustees), and organising committees of major conferences (including IJCAI 2007, 2011, 2017 and AAMAS 2004, 2009).
