The University of Évora, founded in 1559, is a Portuguese public university organized into five Schools: Arts; Sciences and Technology; Social Sciences; Health and Human Development; and Nursing, as well as the Institute for Advanced Studies and Research (IIFA).
In the field of Computer Science, it provides undergraduate and master’s degrees in Informatics Engineering and in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, as well as a doctoral programme in Computer Science. Its 20 R&D Units span a broad range of scientific domains and are all subject to international evaluation under the coordination of IIFA. The University has established 11 endowed Chairs in strategic areas of excellence, including Aerospace, Biodiversity, Renewable Energies, Cultural Heritage, Health, UNESCO-related studies, and High-Performance Computing. It also participates in several National Roadmap of Strategic Research Infrastructures and other research infrastructures, hosts four Collaborative Laboratories (CoLABs), and is a member of four Associated Laboratories.
VISTA Lab (Video, Image, Speech and text Analysis Lab) conducts research and development in the broad domain of Intelligent Computational Systems, encompassing Computer Vision (image and video analysis), Natural Language Processing and Understanding (speech and text analytics), Signal Processing, Multimodal Data Mining, and Applied Artificial Intelligence.
The lab promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, diversity, and responsible research practices, with a strong commitment to ethical AI. It aims to empower students and researchers to achieve advanced scientific outcomes while fostering positive societal impact through cutting-edge technologies and data-informed decision-making.
VISTA Lab comprises 10 integrated researchers and 10 PhD students, currently engaged in 16 funded research projects. It operates as a research unit of the ALGORITMI Research Centre at the University of Évora.
