Founded in 1472, LMU is the leading teaching and research university in Germany ranking 1st in
Germany in the latest Times Higher Education World University Ranking. With the neighbouring
Max-Planck, Helmholtz, and Technical University institutions, it can be regarded as a major Euro-
pean science hub. LMU is a large beneficiary of the German excellence initiative, ERC grants,
Marie Curie Initial raining, European Training Networks and currently offers more than 35 structured
doctoral programs in a broad range of disciplines.
The University Observatory Munich (USM), originallyfounded in 1805, is now part of the physics department of the LMU. Researchers at the USM have been and are involved in several past, ongoing and future, cosmological survey programslike DES, PLANCK, eROSITA, SPT and Euclid. USM was and still is also major contributor to various German research networks like the Clusters of Excellence "UNIVERSE" and “ORIGINS”, Collaborative Research Centre “The Dark Universe” and Priority Program “Physics of the Interstellar Medium”all with strong emphasis on various aspects of computational astrophysics and cosmology.
USM is running an Astronomy Master Program and is teaching within a special, astronomy graduate
school (International Max Planck Research School on Astrophysics. IMPRS).
